Used Tires In Baltimore
- Baltimore is an album by singer/pianist/songwriter Nina Simone. It is part of her later works, and can be regarded alongside Fodder On My Wings (1982) as one of her better achievements of that period.

Happy New Year, Hon
|| january 01 2010 ||
Happy New Year!! Today was very lazy and very busy. The early part was lazy: Rachel and I slept in late and stayed in our PJs until 3 or 4 in the afternoon?? Something like that. That was partly because we were tired but mostly because I had promised to bake a few cakes for a coworker's daughter's first birthday party, and I had to spend the morning finishing the decorations. It was an adventure, because I used fondant for the first time. It came out ok -- not fantastic, but heck, not bad for a first try.
Then came the busy. We dropped off the cakes and headed to Baltimore's Miracle on 34th Street -- a whole street of rowhomes lavishly decorated for Christmas. This photo only shows half the street, but there are lights on both sides. It really was pretty spectacular. And what makes it truly impressive is the amount of time and talent that was put into each home's display -- there are all sorts of homemade decorations, including a hub-cap Christmas tree, snowmen made from old bicycle tires, and a lot of crabs and Baltimorey things made from scrap metal. Very cool.
Afterwards, we headed to a Turkish restaurant called Cazbar. We each had this dish called a Doner, which is apparently very popular in Germany, so Rachel had Doner Kebaps a lot while she was there. I can see why -- they were soooo good. And we got to sit in this very cool, semi-elevated private room/area with a leather couch and drapes. We felt special, lol.
Afterwards, we went to the Charles, an old theatre downtown, to see The Young Victoria. So good. I'd recommend it.
I'd say Rachel got a good taste of Baltimore on her first full day here :)
Adam Plummer, Perry Hall sawmill, 1949
During the 1930's, along with the attempts at farming William and his brother, Joseph, acquired a Frick Steel Threshing machine which he used to develop a clientele of farmers for which he did custom threshing in both Baltimore and Harford Counties. It was mounted on steel wheels and later converted to rubber tires by William. Also during this period, in their travels in the surrounding area, they discovered and purchased an old Geiser sawmill. The sawmill had to be rebuilt for the wooden portion had rotted away. William fitted the castings and bearings to wooden frames developed by him. He also re-configured power units from older truck engines which he used to power the threshing machine and the sawmill. These engines were from Service trucks using Buda and Wisconsin engines. All of this was the forerunner to the sawmill and lumber business which developed after the threshing and farming operations of the 30's and the early 40's.
